Emily Oliver ’80 Plans Legacy Gift to DA with IRA Beneficiary Designation
![]() |
I recently decided to designate 50% of my individual retirement account to Durham Academy. There were so many reasons for this decision. First and least important to me: taxes.
Under current tax law, there may be multiple tax implications if I leave these assets to my children. But there are no taxes if I designate them to charity. An IRA designation also made it possible for me to make a larger contribution to DA than I thought possible. And why Durham Academy? I have received so many lifelong benefits from my DA education and my connection to the community. I was incredibly fortunate that my children were also able to attend the school.
Beyond that, a consulting career that exposed me to schools across the country made me realize that Durham Academy is not just a good school—it's an extraordinary school on a national level. My IRA designation to DA is one of the best investments I could make!
